Park Trails to Be Built Starting Next Year

For more than 40 years, visitors to Indiana's Indiana Dunes National Park have wished for a multi-use trail that would offer easy access to the park's attractions, the Times of Northwest Indiana reports.

Now the National Park Service is considering a plan to reroute 6.3 miles of the Calumet Trail to provide a more scenic view for cyclists and pedestrians.

The county government is also working on paving two portions of the trail.

The reroute would connect with a much larger plan to build a 60-mile trail from Chicago's Calumet Park to New Buffalo, Mich.

About half of the trail is already done, and the county has $4.9 million set aside for the project.

Most of the 50 people who attended a meeting on the plan Tuesday night in the park's Visitors Center were in favor of the reroute.

But the one sticking point in the plan calls for closing portions of Furnessville, Veden, and Hadenfelt Roads, forcing some residents to use US 20 to get to the park.

Others expressed concerns about being shifted to US 20 with its high speed and heavy truck traffic.

The park's plan actually incorporates 4.3 miles of abandoned roads between the Dune Park Station and Lake Shore County Road.

Most in attendance Tuesday night were in favor of the reroute.
