The UN's Industrial Development Organization has teamed up with the Global Cement andConcrete Association to help the world's cement and concrete industries cut their carbon emissions, Phys.org reports.
According to a press release, the GCCArepresenting 80% of cement production outside of Chinais responsible for more than half of the world's concrete production and is also the main membership body for the cement and concrete industry.
The industry is also responsible for 7% of the world's CO2 emissions.
But while the industry has been working to reduce its carbon footprint for years, it has been hampered by a lack of government and industry support.
Now, researchers at the University of Cambridge are hoping to change that.
They've developed a process for simultaneously recycling both the carbon-hungry concrete component and the non-carbon-intensive steel used to make it.
"Our UNIDO Member States face a number of technical, market-related and policy hurdles that make decarbonization commitments even more challenging," UNIDO Director General Gerd M ? ller says in the press release.
"That is why I am very glad to sign this Memorandum of Understanding with the GCCA and a new phase of closer cooperation that will help our Member States to meet their commitments."
